The Singing Moon Movie Poster

I had another great opportunity to create a new film poster for director, Chiyume Sugawara's film Singing Moon. The process of collaborating with Chiyume on her project was totally rewarding and fun. Once again, Max Miceli took the design concept above and beyond all our expectations. See the final result below. Special thanks to Narcisse Chico for hair and makeup and all the actors, Kristin Ford, Ryan Caldwell, Jesse Woodrow and Ary Katz for participating. Congratulations to Chiyume and the Singing Moon crew and the Four Films That Will Move You group for a great premiere screening at L.A. Live's Regal Cinemas.

In the beginning... the concept starts with me pitching an idea to Chiyume along with a badly drawn layout on a white board.

Once the concept is locked it's time to put together a photo shoot. Here on set- Chico is adding last minute touch-ups while Chiyume is taking some behind the scene shots.

The Dirty 30 Birthday/Movie poster. Fore!

When mixing the idea of creating a movie poster style image for a 30th birthday party promo piece, you get Kiran Rouzie's Dirty 30 Birthday Poster. I pitched the concept to Kiran of her in an evening gown, plowing through a birthday cake with a golf driver. Below are the final results. We ultimately created a full size poster that went on display at the party and post cards for the tables. Final composite by my hero Max Miceli. Thanks to Julia Hapney for hair and makeup. Production support by Anthony Bushman and Eric Robbins. Special thanks to Lucy Marie for hanging out till the end of the shoot to help us finish the Moet and clean cake shrapnel off the ceiling.

The Making of the Lepidoctor Movie Poster

I was fortunate enough to be asked by director Jonathan Barenboim to create the poster for his film The Lepidoctor. I pitched the concept of butterflies swirling around the lead character played by Jacob Bertrand in a moody environment. Under the banner of VINPIX Studios, we set up a photo shoot with Jacob and later my graphics and design partner Max Miceli took all of the elements and created the awesome composition you see below.

Working with Jonathan's vision, shooting with Jacob and collaborating with Max made the whole process a totally positive experience.

I was lucky enough to work with director Matt MacDonald on the concept and production of his film's movie poster. Goldenbox is about the antics of two best friends on a James Bond-esque adventure. I photographed the two leads, Johnny Wactor and Chris Hayes on a sound stage and later the brilliant Max Miceli created the final poster composite.

In addition to the poster we also shot Matt's publicity image, creating a playful Hefner/Bond theme. Special thanks to Parisa Azamian for being our beautiful Bond Girl.

Inspired by the final shot of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" I pictured myself on the losing end of a water balloon fight with some unseen neighborhood kids. Art From The Ashes Exhibition

This Saturday night I'm exhibiting two abstract photos at the
Art From The Ashes exhibit in Glendale. With over 50 other talented artists showcasing their pieces it looks to be a successful fundraising event to benefit the Deukmejian Wilderness Park. The Station Fire last year caused considerable damage, with the money raised there is hope the park will be restored again for public use.
Each artist has used items or inspiration from the burned area to create original art. Below is a sneak peek at one of my pieces. I found a burned and rusted bracket, froze it in a sheet of ice and photographed it. The end result was an interesting organic quality I did not expect. Bubbles formed, rust colored the water... I think I'll have to shoot more like this. Come by and see it yourself.

This is the first motion picture camera put into use at the dawn of the film department at USC. Operated and maintained by
Herb Farmer who today will be honored in a memorial service at the new Cinema Complex. I shot this camera on film (yes, film) using a Hasselblad 500C/M, also part of Herb Farmer's Motion Picture Archive at USC. Herb was always happy to let me roam around the archive and photograph pieces in the collection. I will eternally be grateful for his generosity, spirit of sharing and wealth of knowledge. One of the things that stands out for me over the last few weeks of shooting was Evan Rachel Wood's shoes on the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" red carpet. Yes, her shoes. She definitely fits the category of more attractive in person than on screen but also that night she wore these high heels with sparkly glitter on the sole. I thought it was a unique design I had never seen before. When I asked her if I could see more of the bottom, she smiled at me and responded, "That's a first." See for yourself, what do you think?

The Blue Lynxx Photo Shoot, Part 1

Talented Actress/TV Personality/Model, Kikey Castillo collaborated with me on the creation of her action heroine alter ego, The Blue Lynxx. We produced a photo shoot that would have made Tyra proud. The day was made a success with the help of make-up artist Teddi Bergman, behind the scenes photography/videography by
Donna Grillo, production assistance by Melissa Diane. The custom leather vest was by designer Sterling Capricio.

Below are my two favorites:

I used strobing, two point lighting, Shot my Nikon D300 tethered in Lightroom so we could review the shots as they were happening. It all took place at dusk when the sky was darker but still had some light left exposing the power transformers in the background.

It was pretty much dark when when we got to this shot which made all the shadows almost go black, very dramatic. I love the way the light shows off her back and catches on the Katana

"11 Weeks" Movie Poster

A few months back I shot the movie poster for Dipesh Jain's award winning film 11 Weeks. We shot both hands, giving special attention to the marble in the middle which plays an important role in the film. On the same day we also shot Dipesh's publicity portrait. The final composite of the poster was done by talented layout artist Roberto Gomez.

This past weekend I attended HD Expo's workshop, Color Camp 101 at LA Center Studios in Downtown LA. Instruction is provided to give a better understanding of color theory in the motion picture and television industry. So much information, my brain still hurts.

I shot stills last weekend for the Desert Rose restaurant here in Los Feliz. The pictures were ultimately used for their new website created by my friend Jaimie, a talented artist and web builder. I wanted to create images that had a flow and motion to them. It wasn't all work, Donna and I got a chance to enjoy dinner. We highly recommend it. Great food, relaxing outdoor courtyard, full bar. A few weeks ago I volunteered to photograph an LA City Animal Services pet adoption that also doubled as an art opening at the
G2 Gallery in Venice Beach. On display were photos, sculptures and paintings of dogs and cats which help inspire people to adopt. Here are a few highlights:

This past weekend USC's School of Cinematic Arts hosted an open house for donors and the press showing off their new state of the art media complex. Five prints from my Tech Art series were on display in the main lobby of the Hugh Hefner Wing as part of the event. It was exciting to have my work in front of all the guests that included Geroge Lucas, Steven Speilberg, Sean Penn, Tom Cruise... ok, ok, enough name dropping... but is was a thrill to display my work for the best of the film community. Inspired by the famous Salvador Dali photograph "Atomicus" I wanted to create a modern urban image with motion. This photograph is the last frame of the shoot before the sun went down and the best one, thanks to my trusty assistant "lightning trigger" Donna.

Last night I shot the opening reception of Mattia Biagi's Art Exhibition at a space near McCarther Park. In short, all his work consisted of items dipped in tar. It was an intresting way to see familiar objects. I stuck it out till the end as rumor kept circulating that the cash cow for all photogs, Paris would show. This entry marks my 100th entry in the ‘ole blogspot. The experience of shooting new things have been made a little richer by my ability to share with my five loyal readers. Much thanks to Chris Battle who back in the day encouraged me to start a blog. And to Christy Nicolay and Pam Z who were the subjects of my first entry, click here to view. At this point I think my favorite image is of my favorite person. Click here to view the dramatic Christmas shot of my Queen.

The world now finds itself at the dawn of new possibility and growth. I can’t help but to feel inspired by the events around me. I hope that I personally can live on this planet as an example of positivity and prosperity that supports the harmony the world seeks.

Gain and loss. Even as I celebrate with everyone the new positive tone of our country, Donna and I have suffered a loss today. Those of you who have been to our home have all seen our gi-normous gold fish. I purchased her 13 years ago and she passed away today. She lived 12 years and six months longer than I thought she would. Always offering an enthusiastic greeting to anyone who approached the tank or a big messy splash of her tail in appreciation of food, she was a joy to have as a member of our family. Even our cat, Mickey will now need a new routine in the morning instead of rushing to the tank every feeding time begging for a taste of the smelly fish flakes. Stupid fish. She will be missed.

A picture of Fishy shot in 2006 sporting her tumorous chapeau that would eventually take her life. Despite her "second brain" her inner Moby Dick shined through to the very end.

But today is also a beautiful day. Warm and sunny. I’m excited to live, create and give. I look forward to sharing with you what I see. Be well all.

Last Saturday I volunteered to shoot promotional stills for the Spay Day LA and Adoption event held at the West LA Animal Care Center. The day drew pet lovers and celebrities together to promote the adoption of dogs, cats and even rabbits in need of loving homes.

Saturday I shot the opening reception of "Tides of Emotion", the mother daughter exhibition at the James Coleman Gallery in Santa Monica. Katina Zinner's large format abstracts shared the space with dramatic bronze figures by her mom the famed photographer Christa Zinner.

Dance winners from the Dick Clark Productions hit show, "So You Think You Can Dance" kicked off their 2008 Tour with a celebration at Magic Mountain in Valencia. After dark the park closed except for cast and crew. Once I finished shooting PR pictures everyone was anxious to hit the coasters. Me, I passed. the James Coleman Gallery. Olivier who is known for his celebrity portraits showcased his fine art series featuring dramatic landscapes of Southern California beaches.

My friends Mike and Eva threw another fun client party at their pet boutique, Doggie Styles in Beverly Hills. It was a wildly successful French Soirée with lots of snarling, spitting and snorting French Bulldogs. The day attracted the local press and a camera crew from Animal Planet. The store was standing room only with the dog owners wearing perpetual smiles as their Frenchies roughhoused across the floor.

I have to say that Mr. Simmons was very gracious to his fans who paid over $40 for his book and waited in line for hours. He stayed until the line was gone and was very interactive with the crowd.
